Graffiti Girl
After Kinpa, a small portrait of a blonde Japanese girl drawn from memory, my plan was to paint a larger waist-length picture of a similar figure. But that idea was transformed when I noticed an incidental stack of sketches on tracing paper for the intended painting (1). The newly formed concept was to paint a different, larger figure (2) showing overlapping contours of her changing postures (3), with a plaque (ema) on her chest expressing her wish to become a singer, standing in a street (4) where the signs and graffiti-covered walls would display the names of many Japanese singers and their bands.
