⇖Assorted Elegant Beauties of the Present Age⇖Customs of the Boss Lady, Continued References 7–16 are pictures drawn in Japan of historic carved wooden Noh masks in the family collection of the Konparu-ryū school of Noh drama, including the masks of Hannya and Namanari seen near the bottom of the tattoo in this painting and in the next work, Tattoos II. ⇖Tattoos II⇖Manga Fan: Sonya-Mandala Studies 8 and 9 are drawings of further characters discerned on the linoleum floor, and most of them were put into this painting. (See Nanette of the North reference 1 and Cupcakes head sketch 1.)⇖Graffiti GirlAfter Kinpa, a small portrait of a blonde Japanese girl drawn from memory, my plan was to paint a larger waist-length picture of a similar figure. But that idea was transformed when I noticed an incidental stack of sketches on tracing paper for the intended painting (1). The newly formed concept was to paint a different, larger figure (2) showing overlapping contours of her changing postures (3), with a plaque (ema) on her chest expressing her wish to become a singer, standing in a street (4) where the signs and graffiti-covered walls would display the names of many Japanese singers and their bands. ⇖Tomodachi
